Continuing in 2012 and relaunching in 2013

Following a review, the University of Cape Town has re-affirmed its commitment to the continuance of the Department of Information and Library Studies (DILS).  Founded as the School of Librarianship in 1939, the Department is the oldest source for professional education in Library and Information Science in Africa.  It aims to provide research, consultancy and a programme leading to academic and professional qualifications in Library and Information Science.  During 2012 it will continue to run this programme, which includes the Postgraduate Diploma in Library and Information Science (PGDipLIS), the Masters Degree in Library and Information Science (MBibl), the Masters in Philosophy (MPhil)  and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).  The Department will also be undertaking a radical overhaul of its programme ready for a re-launch in 2013.

The department has a primary focus on research and intervention through its professional education programme in the field of information management. Fundamental to this focus is a recognition that access to information can empower people and guide the process of transformation.
The research activity of the department emphasises information needs analysis and information literacy in response to both staff interests and the transformation of society. Staff are actively engaged in information literacy development in association with the Library and Information Services of the University of Cape Town. In addition consultancy is undertaken and is largely concerned with information systems design and the design of information literacy programmes. Other aspects of the department's work include investigations on library performance, measurement and evaluation.
